If due to the constructional features (stern ramp) it is not possible to mark the name of a ship and the name of her port of registry on the transom board, they shall be marked on each of her boards as near to the stern as practicable.

2.3. On a cruiser or a ship with an elliptical stern, the name of the ship and the name of her port of registry shall be marked on the stern of the ship in such manner that the angle of the ship’s board to water shall not exceed 45° at that place. If this is not possible, the name of the ship and the name of her port of registry shall be marked on each of her boards as near to the stern as practicable.

On a ship with an overall length of 50 meters and more and with a superstructure amidships, it is permitted, in addition to the name marked on the bow and on the stern, to mark the name of the ship also on the walls of the upper deck of the superstructure or on a shield attached to the top deck railing.

3.3. The name marked on a wall of a superstructure amidships or on a shield attached to the top deck railing may be illuminated during the hours of darkness.
