§ 1.  National day

  The national day and a day of rest is:
24 February, Independence Day and anniversary of the Republic of Estonia.

§ 2.  Public holidays

  Public holidays and days of rest are:
 1) 1 January – New Year’s Day;
 2) – Good Friday;
 3) – Easter Sunday;
 4) 1 May – May Day;
 5) – Pentecost;
 6) 23 June – Victory Day;
 7) 24 June – Midsummer Day;
 8) 20 August – Day of Restoration of Independence;
 81) 24 December – Christmas Eve;
 9) 25 December – Christmas Day;
 10) 26 December – Boxing Day.

§ 3.  Days of national importance

  The days of national importance are:
 1) 6 January – Epiphany;
 2) 2 February – Anniversary of Tartu Peace Treaty;
 21) 14 March – Mother Tongue Day;
 3) second Sunday in May – Mothers’ Day;
 31) 4 June – Flag Day;
 4) 14 June – Day of Mourning;
 41) 23 August – Day of Remembrance for Victims of Communism and Nazism;

 42) the second Sunday in September – Grandparents’ Day;

 43) 22 September – Resistance Day;

 44) 1 October – Local Self-Government Day;

§ 31.  National mourning

 (1) The Government of the Republic of Estonia may declare a period of national mourning.

 (2) No public events incongruous with mourning may be held on 14 June, the Day of Mourning.

§ 4.  Determination of public holidays and days of national importance

 (1) The public holidays and days of national importance specified in this Act are determined on the basis of the Gregorian calendar.

 (2) The provisions in other legislative acts regarding public holidays and days of national importance apply to the national day.

§ 6.  Entry into force of this Act

  This Act enters into force on 23 February 1998.
