    <p>
      Eesmärk:
    </p>
    <p>
      Suurendada Tartu Observatooriumi panust Gaia missiooni maapealsesse
      tugivaatlusesse enne Gaia missiooni ja Gaia missiooni kestel.
    </p>
    <p>
      Kirjeldus:
    </p>
    <p>
      Gaia andmete töötlemine, mille alusel saadakse missiooni lõpptulemus,
      toimub ESA ja Euroopa astronoomide koostöös. Astronoomide tegevust
      koordineerib Gaia andmetöötluse ja analüüsikonsortsium (DPAC), mis
      moodustati 2006. aastal. Alates sellest ajast on Tartu Observatoorium
      osalenud DPACi CU8 tegevustes ja tähe parameetrite laiendatud mõõdiku (<em>Extended
      Stellar Parametrizer</em> – ESP) ülesannete täitmisel.
    </p>
    <p>
      Projekti eesmärk on suurendada Tartu Observatooriumi panust Gaia
      missiooni maapealse tugivaatluse vallas enne missiooni ja missiooni
      kestel. Koostöö on kavandatud ESP grupi ja Belgia Kuningliku
      Observatooriumiga (PI Yves Fremat) ning see sisaldab keemiliselt
      pekuliaarsete tähtede spektraalandmete ettevalmistamist ning algoritmide
      valimist ja testimist, et klassifitseerida tähti, mille spektris
      esinevad kiirgusjooned. Kuigi peamine algoritmide klassifikatsioon peab
      valmima enne Gaia starti, tuleb seetõttu, et on tehtud otsus määrata
      kindlaks vaadeldavate tähtede põhiparameetrid, teha lisapingutusi kogu
      Gaia tööperioodi jooksul. Nende ülesannete täitmine toimub kolme
      tööpaketina ning täitjateks on kaks täiskohaga vanemteadurit ja
      2–3 (osalise tööajaga) doktoranti või muud teaduskraadiga üliõpilast.
    </p>
    <p>
      Kolm tööpaketti on järgmised:<br/>Tööpakett 1: Algoritmid
      ja Java koodid kiirgusjoontega tähtede (ELS) eristamiseks Gaia
      andmemassiivis ja nende klassifitseerimiseks.<br/>Tööpakett 2:

      B. Maapinna kaugseire</u>
    </p>
    <p>
      <i>1. <u>Kasvuhoonegaaside arvestuse kvaliteedi parandamine Eestis</u></i>
    </p>
    <p>
      Eesmärk:
    </p>
    <p>
      Täiustada maapinna kaugseire andmete kogumise ja töötlemise meetodeid,
      et kasutada neid CO2 neeldumise mudeldamiseks Eestis.
    </p>
    <p>
      Kirjeldus:
    </p>
    <p>
      Eesti Riigikontroll juhtis 2009. aasta novembris tähelepanu asjaolule,
      et Eestil puudub süstemaatiline ja usaldusväärne kasvuhoonegaaside
      arvestus. Seejuures rõhutati, et maakasutuse muutusest ja metsandusest
      põhjustatud CO2 neeldumise arvutamise metoodika on
      kaheldav.
    </p>
    <p>
      Praeguse hinnangu kohaselt neeldub loodusesse umbes 30% CO2
      heitkogusest, kuid seda veavaruga (nii emissioonide kui ka neeldumise
      osas on see väga suur). ÜRO on märkinud, et Eesti ei ole
      kasvuhoonegaaside arvestuse parandamiseks välja töötanud
      riigispetsiifilist (TIER 2) metoodikat.
    </p>
    <p>
      Projekti eesmärk on täiustada maapinna kaugseire andmete kogumise ja
      töötlemise meetodeid, et kasutada neid CO2
      absorbeerumise mudeldamiseks Eestis. Ehkki CO2 absorbeerumise
      mudeldamine võib oleneda riigi eripärast (või loodustingimustest), saab
      maapinna kaugseire andmete ettevalmistamise ja töötlemise metoodikat
      rakendada palju laiemas riikide rühmas. AS Regio pidas juba eeluuringute
      ajal nõu Eesti juhtivteadlastega, kes tegelevad kliimamuutuste
      probleemidega. Ollakse üksmeelel, et kasvuhoonegaaside emiteerimis- ja
      neeldumisvõime operatiivne seire on Eestis kehval järjel. Samuti on
      teadlased märkinud, et kasvuhoonegaaside arvestust on põhimõtteliselt
      võimalik teha palju täpsemini, varustades seeläbi riiki teadusuuringust
      tuleneva oskusteabega. Projekt keskendub kasvuhoonegaaside sidumisvõime
      arvutamisele satelliitpiltide põhjal, mitte emissiooni hindamisele
      satelliidilt maapinna skaneerimisega saadud andmete alusel (mis on palju
      keerulisem ja vajab esmalt täiendavat alusuuringut). Kasvuhoonegaaside
      sidumisvõimet saab arvutada biomassi juurdekasvu alusel, kasutades
      multispektraalsete ja SAR-piltide (radarsatelliitide) analüüsi.
      Satelliidilt maapinna skaneerimise tehnika täiustamiseks tuleb teha
      välitöid ja koguda andmeid kohapeal. See aitab täiustada ja kontrollida
      kasvuhoonegaaside sidumisvõime arvutamiseks kasutatud algoritme. Projekt
      viiakse ellu koostöös eriala tunnustatud teadlastega Tartu Ülikoolist ja
      Tartu Observatooriumist.

      (ORAQUA)</u></i>
    </p>
    <p>
      Eesmärk:
    </p>
    <p>
      Luua veekeskkonna optiliste parameetrite testimiseks Põhjamaade
      testimiskeskus, kus oleks võimalik kaugseire rakendusi testida.
    </p>
    <p>
      Kirjeldus:
    </p>
    <p>
      Projekti eesmärk on Põhjamaade veekeskkonna optiliste parameetrite
      testimiskeskuse loomine veepinna kaugseire rakenduste jaoks. Teenused
      hõlmavad kogu maapinna mõõtmiseks vajaliku ahela toetamist alates
      mõõteseadiste arendamisest kuni kvaliteedikontrolli ja satelliidi
      andmete kontrolli tagamiseni.
    </p>
    <p>
      Kolm tööpaketti:<br/>1) Satelliidi andmete valideerimiseks
      vajaliku spektroradiomeetrite karakteriseerimise ja kalibreerimise
      optilise baaslabori moodustamine.<br/>2) Piltide analüüsimine kohalike
      algoritmidepaikapidavuse hindamiseks ja parandamiseks.<br/>3) Sellise
      multispektraalse mahu hajumismõõdiku (<em>Multispectral Volume
      Scattering Meter</em> – MVSM) arendamine, mis mõõdab looduslike vete ja
      veekeskkondade mahu hajumisfunktsiooni hemisfäärilise nurga ulatuses
      kuni 12 kitsa nähtava spektri ribani.
    </p>
    <p>
      Projekt põhineb nende Tartu Observatooriumi teadlaste pädevusel, kes
      tegelevad satelliidilt maapinna skaneerimisega ja koordineerivad
      projekti; koostöösse on kaasatud kaks Eesti väikeettevõtet:<br/>   –
      Hohenheide on spetsialiseerunud aparaatide (fotodetektorid)
      konstrueerimisele ja karakteriseerimisele, kasutades laserkiirgust ja
      skaneerimistehnikat;<br/>   – Interspectrum on tuntud optiliste ja FTIR
      spektroskoopia aparaatide arendaja ja tootja.

      3. <i><u>Sadama süvendamise keskkonnaseire</u></i>
    </p>
    <p>
      Eesmärk:
    </p>
    <p>
      Täiustada süvendustööde käigus vette sattunud ainete kindlaksmääramise
      metoodikat ja arendada asjakohast tarkvara.
    </p>
    <p>
      Kirjeldus:
    </p>
    <p>
      Üheks peamiseks ülesandeks, mille Euroopa Meresadamate Organisatsioon
      (ESPO) on püstitanud oma keskkonnatavade lepingus (ESPO, 2003), on
      meresadamate jätkusuutlik areng. Kaugseire on sadamate
      keskkonnatingimuste mõistmise ja parandamise võtmeküsimuseks. ESA
      kogutavad maapinna kaugseire kõrgresolutsiooniga andmed on üheks
      võimaluseks see ülesanne lahendada. Süvendamistööd rannikuvetes
      mõjutavad vee kvaliteeti, suurendades heljumi kontsentratsioone. Täpne
      teave heljumi levimise kohta on oluline, et hinnata süvendustööde
      keskkonnamõjusid ja võtta ennetavaid meetmeid vee kvaliteedi langemise
      korral alla lubatud taset.
    </p>
    <p>
      Projekti peamine ülesanne on süvendustööde ajal veesamba tekitatud
      heljumi seire metoodika täiustamine ja tarkvara arendamine. Seire
      tarkvara põhineb GISil ning sisendi muutujad saadakse maapinna kaugseire
      andmetest ja asukohaspetsiifilistest 3D numbrilise mudeldamise
      süsteemidest.

    <p>
      Eesmärk:
    </p>
    <p>
      Uurida sellise portatiivse Holteri südame löögisageduse ja vereringe
      mõõtmise seadme rakendatavust, mis registreeriks ööpäeva jooksul

      signaaliga perifeersetel arteritel.
    </p>
    <p>
      Kirjeldus:
    </p>
    <p>
      Projekti lõppeesmärk on arendada portatiivset Holteri südame
      löögisageduse ja vereringe mõõtmise seadet nii, et see registreeriks
      ööpäeva jooksul patsiendi EKG (elektrokardiogrammi) signaali
      sünkroonselt pulsilaine signaaliga perifeersetel arteritel.
      Registreerimine toimub patsiendi igapäevaste tegevuste ajal ilma teda
      oluliselt häirimata.
    </p>
    <p>
      NASA integreeritud inimuuringute programm (Human Integrated Research
      Program) tõi 2007. aastal välja, et kardiovaskulaarne väärtalitus,
      ortostaatiline intolerantsus, südame tõsise arütmia esinemine, südame
      atroofia, kahanenud aeroobne suutlikkus, regulaarsete füüsiliste
      harjutuste toime ja kosmosekiirgus on kosmoselendude riskid
      kardiovaskulaarsele süsteemile.
    </p>
    <p>
      Selleks et vähendada kardiovaskulaarseid riske, mis võivad ennekõike
      esineda kauakestvatel kosmosemissioonidel, on vaja teha faktiline
      uuring. Seni ei ole vääramatut eksperimentaalset tõestust, mis toetaks
      autonoomse või vaskulaarse väärtalituse olulist esinemist, südame
      düsrütmiat või asümptomaatiliste kardiovaskulaarsete haiguste ilmnemist.
    </p>
    <p>
      Kardiovaskulaarne süsteem muutub kosmoselennul oluliselt erinevate
      mikrogravitatsiooniliste tingimuste tõttu. Muutused toimuvad nii
      lennuaegses südame löögisageduses ja arteriaalses vererõhus kui ka
      autonoomses arteriaalse vererõhu kontrollis. Peamised hemodünaamika
      parameetrid, südame pumpamisfunktsioon ja aju arteriaalne vereringlus
      jäävad kosmoselendude ajal ilmselt stabiilseks; siiski on regulaarselt
      täheldatud muutusi perifeerses vereringes seoses vere ümberjaotumisega
      ja hüpovoleemiaga mikrogravitatsioonis – niinimetatud vedeliku nihkega.
      Kardiovaskulaarne dekonditsioneerumine on avaldunud alaneva kiirenduse
      taluvuse ja ortostaatilise stabiilsuse vähenemises lennujärgsel
      perioodil, mis võib mõjutada astronaudi funktsioone järgneval
      kosmoselennul ning ühtlasi piirata astronaudi võimet väljuda
      hädaolukorras maandunud kosmoseaparaadist ilma kõrvalise abita. Lisaks
      lennujärgse ortostaatilise intolerantsuse probleemile on jälgitud
      astronautide südame rütmihäireid kosmoselennu kestel ja pärast lendu.
      Astronautidele on surma põhjustava arütmia võimalikuks riskiks pidev
      südamevatsakeste tahhükardia või vatsakeste fibrilleerimine, millega
      kaasnev mittepidev vatsakeste tahhükardia võib põhjustada minestamist.
    </p>
    <p>
      Lennueelsed, -aegsed ja -järgsed uuringud peavad näitama, et kosmoses
      tekkivad muutused inimkeha toimimises on taanduvad. Teiseks tahame, et
      astronautidel oleks kosmoses mugav ning et saaksime olla kindlad selles,
      et nad on võimelised täitma oma tähtsaid kohustusi igal
      kosmosemissioonil. Kolmandaks on seda tüüpi uuringutel oluline tähendus
      ka inimestele Maal – iga uuring, mis annab alusteadmisi selle kohta,
      kuidas kardiovaskulaarne süsteem töötab, võib meid aidata igapäevaelus
      lahendada paljusid kardiovaskulaarseid probleeme.

      Lihaste ja luustiku vaheline funktsionaalne seos on hästi teada.
      Skeletiluud ja -lihased on pideva mehaanilise pinge all. Võib eeldada,
      et skeletilihaste toonuse muutused (CNS lihase sõltumatu passiivne
      pinge – EMG vaikus) mõjutavad skeletiluude mehaanilise stressi
      tingimusi, mis omakorda mõjutavad skeletiluude ainevahetusprotsesse.
      Kosmoses veedetud aja jooksul ilmnevad osteoporoosi sümptomid. Praegu
      puuduvad andmed astronaudi lihaste toonuses toimuvate muutuste kohta
      kosmoselennu kestel. Võib püstitada hüpoteesi, et pikaajalisel kosmoses
      viibimisel ilmnevad märkimisväärsed negatiivsed muutused lihaste
      toonuses, mis võib kaasa tuua ainevahetusprotsesside olulise
      aeglustumise, mis omakorda põhjustab osteoporoosi. Müomeetria AS on
      välja töötanud müomeetrilise meetodi ja Myotoni seadme pindmiste
      skeletilihaste toonuse ja biomehaaniliste omaduste mõõtmiseks<i>
      in vivo</i>, mis on tõestanud oma kasulikkust rehabiliteerimise,
      töötervishoiu, kliinilise meditsiini ja teadusuuringute alal. On
      võimalik välja töötada Myotoni seadme eriversioon, mis on töökindel ja
      sobib astronaudi lihastoonuse kehavälisteks ja pikaajalisteks
      mõõtmisteks gravitatsiooni ja kosmose keskkonnas.

      E. Truve laboratoorium Tallinna Tehnikaülikooli geenitehnoloogia
      osakonnas uurib taime üksikute müosiinide funktsioone. Üldiselt on
      müosiinide funktsioonid hästi kindlaks tehtud – molekulaarsed
      liigutajanärvid liiguvad piki aktiinikiude (näiteks inimese lihased
      liiguvad müosiinide lihasfunktsiooni tõttu). Arabidopsise taimemudelis
      on vähemalt 17 müosiinigeeni.
    </p>
    <p>
      Projekt püüab lahendada järgmist teaduslikku küsimust: miks 17, mitte
      ainult üks? Mis on nende 17 erineva taimemüosiini individuaalsed
      funktsioonid? Projekt püüab vastata neile küsimustele, kasutades selleks
      ümberpööratud geneetilist lähenemisviisi. Töö tegijal on laboratooriumis
      mitmeid müosiinide ühe-, kahe-, kolme- ja neljakordseid <i>knock-out</i>e,
      mis jagatakse fenotüüpidesse, kasutades eri lähenemisviise ja meetodeid.
      Muu hulgas on teada, et müosiinid vahendavad ka taime liikumisi
      gravitropismiga kohanemisel (s.o taime pöörduv või kasvav liikumine
      vastuseks gravitatsioonile). Praegu pole aga teada, millised müosiinid
      eraldi võetult selle eest vastutavad. Võimalus jälgida mutantide
      fenotüüpe samal ajal normaalse gravitatsiooni ja nullgravitatsiooni
      tingimustes oleks teaduslikult väga huvitav ja väljakutset pakkuv.
      Projekti hüpotees on järgmine: mõnda <i>knock-out</i>
      fenotüüpi, jälgituna normaalse gravitatsiooni tingimustes,
      mikrogravitatsioon ei mõjuta (s.o gravitropism ei ole nende fenotüüpide
      avaldumiseks kriitiline). Selle käigus võidakse avastada alamhulk
      Arabidopsise tsütoskeletist sõltuvaid väärarenguid, mis ei olene mitte
      üksnes müosiinidest, vaid neid müosiine võivad samal ajal mõjutada või
      kontrollida tavalised gravitatsioonijõud.
    </p>
    <p>
      Projekti lõppeesmärk on paremini mõista taime üksikute müosiinide
      bioloogilist rolli.

      Vaatamata sellele, et Eestil on Euroopa koostööriigi staatus, on ESA

      Vajalikku funktsionaalsust arendatakse peamiselt Modesat FPGA modemi
      põhimälus. Modesat FPGA põhimälu integreeritakse emuleeringu keskkonda
      ja realiseeritakse DVB-S2/RCS süsteemidel baseeruvad õigsuse kontrolli
      ja jõudluse hindamise rakendusstsenaariumid. Tagasiühildust koos
      pärandsüsteemidega hinnatakse, kuid see ei ole piirav tegur. Töö
      sisaldab simulatsioone, samuti tegelikku laboratoorset tõestamist,
      kaasates prototüüp-riistvara, tulemuseks on modemi sünkronisatsiooni
      jõudluse täielik iseloomustus.
    </p>
    <p>
      Modesat Communications on teinud satelliitside valdkonnas suurel hulgal
      projekteerimis- ja simulatsioonitöid. Sellele vaatamata on äritegevuse
      keskmes olnud lühilaine raadiotooted ning satelliitside tooted ei ole
      veel elujõulise kommertstootena täielikult välja arendatud. Ehkki
      mikrolaine raadiotoodetega on tehnilisi sarnasusi, on ka olulisi
      erinevusi kanalite karakteristikas, signaali degradeerumistes ja
      seadmete hinna elementides, mille tulemuseks on mitmesugused modemi
      konstruktsiooni piirangud. Selle teadus- ja arendusprojekti eesmärk on
      arendada täielikult välja satelliitside modem ja iseloomustada selle
      toimimist reaalses keskkonnas. Lõpptulemuseks peaks olema valmis
      modemitoode täielikult dokumenteeritud toimimiskarakteristikutega, kaasa
      arvatud stsenaariumide identifitseerimine, mille puhul saavutatakse
      maksimaalne toimimine.
    </p>
    <p>
      Satelliitlevi jaoks on praegune oskustase määratud DVB-S2 standardiga.
      Sellele vaatamata takistavad standardi pakutavate võimaluste täielikku
      kasutamist praegused sünkroniseerimistehnoloogiate rakendused, mis ei
      ole küllalt jõulised degradatsioonide kanaliseerimiseks, eriti koos
      standardis spetsifitseeritud kõrgema järjestusega modulatsiooni
      skeemidega (16 ja 32AAPSK). PilotSyncTM tehnoloogialt loodetakse selles
      valdkonnas olulisi eeliseid ja võimalust saada kogu standardi pakutav
      tulu. PilotSyncTM kasutamine tagab ka kõrgema järgu modulatsiooni
      skeemide signaali mürataseme kuni 6 detsibelli madalamalt kui ilma selle
      piloottoonita, laiendades operatsioonikanalite tingimuste ulatust enne
      madalama järgu modulatsioonile lülitamist (mis teistpidi vähendab
      võimalikku läbilaskevõimet). See tunnus parandab adaptiivkodeerimise ja
      modulatsiooni (<em>Adaptive Coding and Modulation</em>, ACM)
      operatsiooni režiimi toimimist, tulemuseks on üldise keskmise
      läbilaskevõime suurenemine 20% võrra või enam.
    </p>
    <p>
      Satelliidile tagasipöördelingi standard on määratud DVB-RCS abil, mis
      varustab MF-TDMA skeemi. Samuti, varustatuna mitmete tootjate poolt
      mõningase koostalitusvõime astmega, standard ikka veel kujuneb, ning
      paljud tootjad kasutavad parema tulemuse saavutamiseks omanikuseisundit.
      Selles olukorras eeliseid, mida pakuvad PilotSyncTM jõuline
      sünkronisatsioon DVB-RCS-is ja teise tagasipöörde lingi kanali skeemid,
      uuritakse ja kvantifitseeritakse täies ulatuses. Lisaks sellele
      hinnatakse PilotSyncTM-i kasutamise eeliseid mobiilse satelliitside
      stsenaariumides olukordades, kui sideterminaliks on kas maa-, mere-,
      õhu- või käsimobiil. Samuti tuleb silmas pidada rakendusstsenaariume,
      mis kasutavad lairibasidet (nt maa vaatluse andmeid) LEO satelliitidelt,
      mis liiguvad maapinnal fikseeritud punktide suhtes kiiresti.

      Töötada välja uue konstruktsiooniga reflektori paneel, mis toimib
      paremini võrreldes DSA1 ja DSA2ga.

    <p>
      Kirjeldus:

    <p>
      Lähtudes New Norcia antenni loomise kogemusest, on Cerberose antenni
      reflektori paneelidele esitatavad täpsuse nõuded rangemad, et saavutada
      Ka-Bandis soovitud toimimine. Ajapiirangute tõttu valiti tol ajal
      lähenemisviis, mis jätab konstruktsiooni muudatused minimaalseteks
      võrreldes New Norcia paneelidega. Ainukeseks konstruktsiooni muudatuseks
      oli isolatsiooni lisamine paneeli tagaküljele, et vähendada paneeli
      läbiva soojuse gradienti, mis omakorda piirab paneeli soojuskoormuste
      tõttu. Samuti sobib see lähenemisviis Cerberose puhul, kriitiliseks
      võivad kujuneda järgmised aspektid:<br/>   – Reflektori pinna
      täpsus sobib Cerberosele marginaalselt, karmima soojuskeskkonna korral
      aga enam ei sobi.<br/>   – Isolatsiooni lisaraskuse tõttu paremus, mis
      saavutati soojuslikus käitumises, kompenseeriti osaliselt Cerberose
      suurema gravitatsioonilise deformatsiooniga.<br/>   –
      Isolatsioonimaterjali pikaajaline stabiilsus, kulutused uuendamise
      korral.<br/>   – Valitud lähenemisviis vähendab vaid ühe panustaja osa
      kogu pinna täpses eelarves. Sellest erineva lähenemisviisiga, näiteks
      paneeli materjalide, tootmise tehnoloogia või konstruktsiooni muutmine,
      võib lõpptulemusena vähendada rohkem panustajaid.<br/>   –
      Samuti loodetakse, et koos uuema võimalikuks saanud tootmistehnoloogiaga
      saab kõrgstabiilseid paneele toota mõistlikuma hinnaga.
    </p>
    <p>
      Seega on ettepanek arendada uut reflektori paneeli konstruktsiooni,
      eesmärgiga parendada tuleviku DSA reflektori paneelide suutlikkust,
      seotud järgmiste töödega:<br/>   – juba hinnatud
      olemasoleva projekti spetsifikatsiooni läbivaatamine ja konsolideerimine,<br/>   –
      tehnoloogia läbivaatamine ja kompromissi leidmine paneeli
      konstruktsioonis,<br/>   – esindusliku reflektoripaneeli üksikasjalik
      projekteerimine,<br/>   – prototüübi valmistamine,<br/>   –

          National Audit Office of Estonia pointed out in November 2009 that
          Estonia lacks systematic and credible accounting on greenhouse
          gases. Among several remarks, it was emphazised that calculation of
          absorbing CO2 by land use changes and forests was very
          doubtful.<b> </b>Current estimation is that about 30% CO2
          emissions are absorbed by nature, but the margin of error (both for
          emissions and absorption is huge). UN has pointed out that Estonia
          has not worked out country-specific (TIER 2) methodology to improve
          greenhouse gas inventory.
        </td>

        <td>
          This project is aiming at improving methods for providing and
          processing Earth Observation data to be used in CO2
          absorbing modeling for Estonia. Although CO2 absorbing
          modeling can be relatively country (or natural conditions)-specific,
          EO data preparation and processing methodology should be applicable
          for much wider group of States. During the preparatory research AS
          Regio has already consulted with the leading scientists working on
          climate change problems in Estonia. All agreed that current
          operational monitoring and estimation of greenhouse gases emission
          and absorbing in Estonia is very poor. The scientists also noted
          that in principle it is possible to implement the greenhouse gas
          inventory much more accurately when applying the state of the art
          knowledge derived from scientific research. The project will focus
          on calculating the greenhouse gases absorption from satellite
          imagery, not on estimating emission from remote sensing data (which
          is more difficult and needs some additional basic research at
          first). The greenhouse gases absorption will be calculated through
          biomass production using multispectral and SAR satellite imagery.
          For complementing the remote sensing techniques, field works will be
          carried out and <i>in situ </i>data will be collected. This will
          help to fine-tune and verify the algorithms used for calculating the
          greenhouse gas absorption. The project will be performed in
          cooperation with recognized scientists in the field from Tartu
          University and Tartu Observatory.

          One of the main challenges identified by the European Sea Ports
          Organization (ESPO) in its environmental code (ESPO, 2003) was the
          sustainable development of sea ports. Remote and continuous
          monitoring is a key aspect of improving the understanding of port
          environmental conditions. Different high resolution Earth
          Observation (EO) data provided by ESA is one of the alternatives for
          fulfilling this task. Dredging operations in coastal waters affect
          water quality through an increase in suspended matter

          The cardiovascular system undergoes significant alterations during

          reductions in heart rate and arterial blood pressure (BP) as well as
          changes in autonomic control of arterial BP. The parameters of
          general hemodynamics, the pumping function of the heart and arterial
          circulation in the brain are considered to remain stable during
          space flights; however, alterations in peripheral circulation
          associated with blood redistribution and hypovolemia in microgravity
          – so called fluid shift – has been regularly recorded. The
          cardiovascular deconditioning has showed itself as loss of descent
          acceleration tolerance and orthostatic instability in the
          post-flight period, which may interfere with astronaut function
          during reentry and following space flight, and may limit the ability
          of an astronaut to exit a landed spacecraft unaided during an
          emergency. In addition to the problem of post-flight orthostatic
          intolerance, a variety of heart rhythm disturbances have been
          observed in astronauts during and after space flight. The potential
          lethal arrhythmic risk for astronauts is sustained ventricular

          The functional relation between muscle and skeletal systems is well
          known. Skeletal bones and muscles are under constant mechanical
          tension. It can be assumed that changes in the tone (CNS independent
          passive tension of the muscle – EMG silent) of the skeletal muscles
          affect the condition of the mechanical stress of the skeletal bones,
          which in turn influence the metabolic processes in skeletal muscles.
          Osteoporosis symptoms appear during the time spent in space. There
          is currently no data regarding the changes in astronaut’s muscle
          tone during space flights. A hypothesis can be made that during
          longer stay in space, the declining changes in the muscle tone are
          considerable and it may therefore significantly affect the slowdown
          of the metabolic processes, which in turn causes osteoporosis.
          Müomeetria AS has developed a myometrical method and Myoton device
          for <i>in vivo</i> measurements of superficial skeletal muscle tone
          and biomechanical properties, which has been proven to be useful in

          of the Myoton device that is reliable and relevant for non-invasive

          E. Truve’s laboratory at the Department of Gene Technology at the
          Tallinn University of Technology is studying the functions of
          individual plant myosins. Generally, the function of myosins is well
          established – these are molecular motors moving along actin
          filaments (for instance, human muscles are moving due to thew
          function of myosins). In model plant Arabidopsis, there are at least
          17 different myosin genes.

      </tr>
      <tr>
        <td>
          The present project is trying to solve the following scientific
          question: why 17 and not just one? What are the individual functions
          of these 17 different plant myosins? The project will try to answer
          these questions using the reverse genetics approach. The contractor
          has many different single, double, triple and quadruple knock-outs
          of myosins in his lab, and will be phenotyping these, using various
          approaches and methods. Among others, it is known that myosins
          mediate also the plant movements termed gravitropism (i.e turning or
          growth movement by a plant in response to gravity). Which myosins
          are responsible for that in particular, is not known. Possibilities
          to follow the phenotypes of mutants in parallel under normal gravity
          and zero gravity would be scientifically very interesting and
          challenging. Working hypothesis is that some knock-out phenotypes
          observed under normal gravity are not affected by microgravity (i.e
          gravitropism is not critical for the expression of these
          phenotypes), whereas one could detect a subset of
          cytoskeleton-dependent developmental abnormatilities of Arabidopsis
          which are indeed dependent not only on myosins, but at the same time
          also on the normal gravity forces inducing or regulating these
          myosins.

          For satellite broadcast links, the current state of the art is
          defined by the DVB-S2 standard. Nevertheless, full exploitation of
          the possibilities offered by the standard is hampered by the
          performance of present synchronization technologies, which are not
          sufficiently robust to channel degradations, especially with the
          higher order modulation schemes (16 and 32APSK) specified in the
          standard. PilotSyncTM technology is expected to provide significant
          advantages in this area, and will make it possible to reap the full
          benefits offered by the standard. In particular, use of PilotSyncTM
          maintains synchronization of higher order modulation schemes at
          Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) up to 6 dB lower than without this pilot
          tone, extending the range of operational channel conditions before
          having to switch to lower order modulation (which in turn decreases
          the available throughput). This characteristic will improve the
          performance of the Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) mode of
          operation, resulting in an overall increase in average throughput of
          20% or more.

        <td>
          On the return link over satellite, the standard is defined by
          DVB-RCS, which implements an MF-TDMA scheme. Although implemented by
          several manufacturers, with some degree of interoperability, the
          standard is still evolving and many manufacturers use their own
          proprietary system in order to achieve better performance. In this
          context, the benefits that PilotSyncTM robust synchronization
          provides in DVB-RCS and other return link channel schemes will be
          fully investigated and quantified. Additionally, the performance
          advantages of using PilotSyncTM in mobile satcomms scenarios will be
